A Baby's Life Saved By the World's Smallest Artificial Heart
In March, Italian doctors were faced with a baby who would not live unless a real heart was ready for transplant. The doctors decided to give the baby a transplant once it was born. When it was born, they successfully gave the baby the world's smallest artificial heart. The device is a titanium pump weighing only 11 grams and that can endure a flow of up to 1.5 litres per minute. A few days later after the artificial heart was put in, a real donor heart was available, and now the baby is fine. This shows how much we've advanced in medical technology.
